Silence

The sea was telling me the tale of love,
It murmured to evoke frothy visions.
The tone was familiar enough –
I almost heard your voice in waves’ collisions.

Its sound was all velvety and sweet,
I covered up my ears, shy and flustered,
But then the tenth wave’s risen from the deep –
And came onshore, and everyone got busted.

It often happens so: when the voice,
Is sweet and satisfying to the ear,
But suddenly you’re given no choice –
You feel the steel beneath its silky gear:

The steely core has ancient armour glare,
Its filigree lacework a put-on semblance,
One heedless step – and you land up in jail,
In heavy shackles… totally in shambles.

It’s hard to tell the difference: flam or truth?
Love’s always been a game of do's and don'ts,
So at times it’s not apparent –whom
You face – a jailer or a knight, or both.

Oh dear life, I’ll have your lesson learned!
Huge thanks for all your guidance and instruction!..
But lo! Behind my window a horn
Is calling – and away ashore I’m rushing…

I am afraid of neither storms nor waves,
Nor tempests wrecking ships and playing nasty…
What I dread truly is the silence – when
Love ceases speaking apropos of nothing.
