The Canon of Love

It’s sensible when life
and love walk hand in hand,
When flowers are abloom,
          confessions are exchanged,
When kids keep growing up
and start to look like us —
But are there black spots
          we wouldn’t recognize?...
Because some shadowed nook
          exists in every soul,
And love at times does play
          not so kind a role:
Ah, passion fuels wars,
and makes us humble slaves —
And God forbid that we
          fall out of its grace!
The conqueror of hearts —
          is he a worthy one?
His temple is built on blood,
the harm can’t be undone —
The battle is hot and hard,
          the rival is deadlocked…
A winner takes it all — and love!
          That’s how it always worked.
